Thanks to the Greek Goddess of sexuality and love (Aphrodite), we have a wonderful name for substances which increase sexual desire – Aphrodisiacs. Throughout history many foods drinks and behaviors have been reputed to improve your sex life, staminia and libido. However, aphrodisiacs aren’t just about the chemical properties of the foods and drinks, but also about the texture, taste, smell and resemblances association to sex.

Most aphrodisiacs enhance aspects of the sensory experience such as sight, touch, smell, taste and hearing not to mention the psychological aspects – which in turn increases sexual drive or libido, improves performance and results in greater sexual satisfactionSome foods are thought to have aphrodisiac properties.

Foods which have been shown to exhibit aphrodisiac properties:

Oysters have had a long reputation of being an effective aphrodisiac, and for that reason have been eaten raw. A new study recently shows that oysters, clams, mussels and scallops all have chemical compounds that release sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. However, aphrodisiacs aren’t just about the chemical, but also about the direct association with sex. Raw oysters is one such aphrodisiac in which the consumption of this food is very closely referenced to female genitalia.

Saffron, a spice cultivated from the flower saffron crocus, is commonly used in Spanish, Italian and Indian cuisine not only has a reputation as a sexual drug that spans thousands of years but also recent research has verified these claims.

A team of scientists from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada found that saffron improve sexual function and libido more than chocolate, and certainly more than wine, which impedes performance despite arousing lust.

In 2002, studies conducted in the Southerin Illinois University School of Medicine confirmed ginseng’s sexual effects by demonstrating that it boosted the libido and performance of lab rats. Ginseng, a root native to northern China, Korea and Sibera, can function as a natural form of Viagra. This medicinal root continues to be used as an effective herbal remedy in eastern medicine

Originating from Western Africa and can be found in Nigeria, Cameroon, the Congo and Gabon, Yohimbe is the bark derived from the an evergreen tree used for thousands of years as a natural aphrodisia used to increase libido and treat erectile dysfunction.

Yohimbine has been found to relax and dilate blood vessels in the penis, resulting in increased blood flow and erection. It may also stimulate areas in the brain involved in sexual desire. It has been shown to work better for erectile dysfunction not caused by a physical problem and also found to increase lipolysis (weight loss) and effective in the treatment of depression.

Tongkat Ali

Gaining popularity in recent history and even touted as the “Asian Viagra” in 1999 in New Sunday Times, the medicinal root, derived from the Tongkat Ali tree which is native to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

The Tongkat Ali root has been used for many years by men to increase sexual desire, libido and sexual performance to treat erectile dysfunction. This natural aphrodisiac appears to work by increasing testosterone levels. Testosterone is the primary hormone responsible for the growth and development of male reproductive organs. In recent years Tongkat Ali has also been adopted by bodybuilders to increase their muscle mass.

Tribulus Terrestris (Puncture Vine)

The popularity of Tribulus and main stream acknowledgement first come to light when it was known to be used by Eastern European Olympic athletes to help with their performance back in the mid-1900′s.

Tribulus terrestris is a herb that has been used in the traditional medicine of China and India for centuries. Tribulus is most often used for infertility, erectile dysfunction and low libido and also been recently used for improved sports performance.  Tribulus is noted to increase testosterone by increasing luteinizing homone, DHEA and estrogen.

Natural Aphrodisiacs are Preferred:

Natural aphrodisiacs are preferred by many people over synthetic drugs (such as Viagra and Cilias) not only because of the serious side effects associated with synthetic drugs (headaches and muscle pain are the most common) but also because synthetic drugs are only able to prolong sexual performance not inprove sexual desire or libido – which can lead to far greater sexual enjoyment.
